About the play:
When a Tornado tosses Dorothy and her little dog Toto into the adventure of a lifetime in the magical land of Oz, Dorothy discovers that what she wants most in all the world is to find a way home. Along a yellow brick road she meets a Scarecrow, a Tin Woodman and a Cowardly Lion, each with a dream they hope the Wizard of Oz will turn into reality… if only they can make it to his Emerald City – past the wild, hungry Kalidahs and through a field of poisonous Poppies.
But the Wizard refuses to grant their wishes unless they destroy the Wicked Witch of the West, and the Witch sends some Winged Monkeys to enslave them. As if that’s not enough, they must also fight a Spider with legs as big as tree trunks and outwit a tribe of grouchy Hammer-Heads. With a little help from some friendly Munchkins and Quadlings, Winkie slaves, field Mice, Citizens of the Emerald City and a couple of Good Witches, plus a great deal of courage and resourcefulness, Dorothy and her friends have everything they need to make their own dreams come true.
L. Frank Baum’s classic children’s story, first published in 1900, was enshrined in popular culture with the success of the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz, starring Judy Garland. Calico’s adaptation, written especially for young performers, is based on Baum’s original book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz provides opportunities for children to act, dance, sing or try their hands at puppetry. This is a spectacular show, with colourful costumes, fabulous puppets and scenery for forests, a witch’s castle, Munchkinland, the Emerald City, Quadling country and Dorothy’s home – all available to schools and theatre venues, along with the script, music and support from professional theatre director Jenny Wake.
